What's Going On?

In 2014, after Russia had invaded the Crimea region in Ukraine, I did a class with students answering their questions about it and outlining what was happening, using my phone to show videos and photos (it was a small class).

As the class was winding up, my phone buzzed with a news alert announcing the next development. The students couldn't believe it. We had talked about world affairs in History and CSPE classes before, but this was definitely the most live class we'd ever had. It's a class I'll never forget.

I enjoy when students ask about events which are taking place in the world today, but I don’t get a lot of time to discuss these things with them when we have a whole curriculum to get through. So after thinking about it for a while, I've started "What's Going On?". It might appear to be very CSPE-based at first glance, and perhaps that's true, but I've tried to put things in such a way that it can be used in a cross-curricular fashion.

It's an evolving project, and will probably change a bit from time to time depending on what works - so please, if you find it useful or have anything to say just leave a comment below!

Because my PDF conversion seems to be a bit unpredictable, if you're having trouble reading the issues properly, please let me know.

Revision!

Okay, so I'm going to outline what to expect in a Leaving Cert History test. As you know, the course is split into two parts: Ireland and Europe and the Wider World. In both of these parts, there are six "topics", and students must do two from Ireland and two from Europe. The topics we're doing are:

Ireland:
Topic 3: The Pursuit of Sovereignty
Topic 6: Government, Economy and Society in the Republic of Ireland (we start this one after the Pres)

Europe and the Wider World:
Topic 3: Dictatorship and Democracy (Document Q)
Topic 6: The United States and the World

It's a nice coincidence that our topics are all 3s and 6s - I didn't do that on purpose. The exam paper will have every single one of the topics on it, but you only have to do the ones you've done in 5th/6th Year - so only the 3s and 6s. Don't do anything marked Topic 1, 2, 4 or 5.

The paper is laid out like this:

Question 1: Documents-Based Question
You've all seen this before, because I've given you all samples of it. This is where Europe Topic 3 - Dictatorship and Democracy comes in - the questions will be on one of its three case studies:
  • Stalin's Show Trials
  • The Nuremberg Rallies
  • The Jarrow March
Here are some revision notes for the three case studies.

Question 2: Ireland
You must do two topics from this part - Topics 3 and 6 for us. Don't worry about doing Topic 6 in the test after the midterm though, it wouldn't many any sense to test you on something we haven't done yet.

Revision notes for Topic 3:

Revision notes for Topic 6:
I'm going to put some notes here if people are interested, we'll be looking at this stuff after the exams anyway. Don't worry too much about it.

  • RTÉ
  • Seán Lemass
  • The Mother and Child Scheme
  • Life for Women

Question 3: Europe and the Wider World
You must only do one topic from this part, as Europe Topic 3 is in the Document question so it won't actually appear in this part. In other words, you must only do Topic 6 - The United States.

Revision notes for Topic 6:

I'll have the rest of the notes up by the weekend.

Hello, and welcome to the beginning of a new series which will explore the reasons behind the Easter 1916 Rising and its importance in Irish history. This school year (2015/16) we will celebrate the centenary (100 year anniversary) of the Rising, with many events being planned in schools and communities across the country.

This series will update every week, telling the story of the events which led up to April 1916, when members of the IRB and Irish Volunteers occupied several buildings in Dublin City (most notably the GPO) and proclaimed an Irish Republic.

Like any historical event, the Rising is open to different interpretations, and people have different understandings of it based on their own identities and sympathies. This series will look at this aspect of the Rising as well.

Understanding 1916 is a Cork Life Centre and History Help project.

Case Studies (2016 - 2017)

Leaving Cert > Dictatorship and Democracy > Case Studies for 2016 and 2017

So, as explained in the Leaving Cert Exam section, the first part of your exam will be a Document Question based on one of three Case Studies.

Every two years, the Department of Education chooses one of the Leaving Cert History topics to be the prescribed topic, meaning it will be the topic that the Document Question will be about.

For the 2016 and 2017 exams, that topic is Dictatorship and Democracy in Europe, 1920 - 1945. Your Document question will be on one of the three Case Studies from that topic:

Looking for some advice on how to answer Document Questions? Come right this way...

Dictatorship and Democracy in Europe, 1920 - 1945

Welcome to a time that we most certainly won't be forgetting any time soon...

Now, for the next two exam years (2016 and 2017), Dictatorship and Democracy is a prescribed topic, meaning it absolutely has to be covered in your study of Leaving Cert History. Specifically, you must look at the three Case Studies from this topic - Stalin's Show Trials, the Nuremberg Rallies, and the Jarrow March. Go to the Case Studies and Documents page to learn more.

Case Studies and Documents

If you want to look at the rest of Dictatorship and Democracy, it has its own page here, but keep in mind that only the Case Studies will come up in the exams for 2016 and 2017, no other part of it will.
